The project of the Floating Community Library Mamori propose a collaborative process with the community of Mamori's Lake Brazilian Amazon Rainforest, involving sustainable construction and education.
Mamori Lake located in a central Amazon Rainforest, distributed along a very extensive lake shore, and a greater number of children aged. After almost two decade of research and experimentations in design and architecture with a strong relationship with the local community and biomimetic methodology (Architectural Association Visiting School workshops), we found out that the main problems are directly related with industrial construction technologies and unsustainable materials that creates new architectural typologies not compatible with climate conditions, misleading the fundamentals of quality of life of local culture. Our project presents a tangible architectural prototype for experimental construction and use of local materials integrated with recycled ones (from solid plastic waste in the region).
The project will operate as a learning hub for sustainable construction and environmental education. The simple but effective infrastructure, host a child and adult library with a selection of books related to cultural and natural preservation, ecology and explanation of local and global ecosystem, solid waste treatment, recycle and upcycle. Operation wise, the BCFM will be administered locally by community female leaders and updated with books by the NGO Vaga Lume, which will start already with a donation of first year 200 books and each year a new supply of 100 books.
The ongoing realisation of this project is possible thanks to Goethe Institute and Prince Claus Fund ”ARTISTIC RESPONSES TO ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE” program, collaboration of Alessandra Araujo biologist and biomimeticist from Bio-inspirations, Nacho Marti designer and co-director at Architectural Association Visiting School Amazon, the Vaga Lume NGO, Mamori Lake community and thank to all that believed in the importance of this project!
