Inspired by concepts like mutation, transformation, irreverence, identity and sensuality, we directed the scenography project for the David Bowie exhibition.
Based on the geometry of his icon and best known symbol, flash, we designed in a unique gesture, simple and clear, to create an abstract space and mood.
From the geometry generated by Bowie’s flash, we began to "make up" the museum, occupying its rooms with each of the topics proposed by the curators. We were searching to "geometrize David Bowie" and deconstruct the building’s architecture in order to create an ethereal atmosphere: outlined angles with glowing lines that would transport the visitor to the oneiric Bowie universe. This universe, we understood, should be as elegant and visionary as the artist. Therefore, we used relatively unexplored electroluminescent materials to draw lightning on the black background, namely the carpets.
Visitors entered the exhibition by passing through a tunnel of light, which created the transition from the museum lobby to the exposition’s abstract geometric environment. The electroluminescent edges were all bluish white, complemented with some multicolored lines representing Bowie`s colorful chameleon diversity.
Different installations, like a kaleidoscope, a room featuring a 360-degree projection, karaoke, and a parametrically designed installation made with the artist’s favorite books complemented the exhibition.
Finally, the visitor’s immersive experience was completed by wireless headphones playing Bowie's songs that changed according to where the visitor was in the exhibition and a pointed, low-intensity, warm-temperature lighting that set the mood of a video clip.
