To us, the Hipódromo da Cidade Jardim (built in 1941) is one of the most exuberant buildings in São Paulo. Composed by various pavilions housing elegant bleachers, private cabins, and restaurants, the whole complex occupies a few thousand square meters of charming architecture and recently has become a popular venue for large events.
When invited to design an event scenography at that location, we were shocked by the state of decay of the historical buildings from intense mistreatment by previous events hosted there.
Instead of repeating the pattern, we reused all the existing construction debris and made partial removals and cuts to “reveal” the building’s extant beauty.
That very gesture gave rise to an intervention with an approximate area of 3000m2 complete with facilities such as galleries, exhibition areas, stores, restaurants as well as the main sponsor VIP area.
The VIP UBS area, contrasted the rest of the project in materiality and was designed using ropes that create different pieces of furniture, lamps and finishings, modeling a continuous and fluid space.
