In Montenegrin culture, the circle is where families used to gather and prepare their food. Thus, it became the main inspiring metaphor for the introduction of the public into the scenography.
The "opening" of the circle represents the opening of the doors of the house and highlights Montenegrin hospitality. The circle is also a structure of Montenegrin national dance (called “Gumno”) as well as the basic setting for folk dance in the history of Montenegrin villages. Gumno is anthropologically a fundamental element for organizing a family, social, cultural and metaphysical structure, as part of a rich Montenegrin national heritage.
Another aspect of presenting Montenegro was through its natural beauty. The ceiling installation is made of wool, a traditional Montenegrin material that represents the expressive natural topography. The bold outline of the Montenegrin mountain Durmitor against the sky and the constant view of its huge stature becomes the main element of the project. The inverted volume reflects the mirror on the floor where the public “walks over the mountain”.
At a narrative level, the visitors will stand under the mountain Durmitor which reflects Crno Jezero (Black Lake, the mirror on the floor). This moment in the scenography represents the climax in the experience created by pavilion.
The mountain created different atmospheres lighted in four shifting colors inspired by the hues of the sky during the four seasons.
